Dearest Friends, Supporters & Extended Global Family,
After 30 years filming all over my two beloved countries, today here in NYC, thanks to the support of award winning filmmakers Susanne Rostock and Sir Christopher Hampton, Indochina Film Arts Foundation launched the first in a series of screenings to present my life’s work all over the USA – online, in theaters, and on college campuses to commemorate 50 years since the American War ended in Việt Nam.
Dear Vietnam is an intensely personal film in the vein of my first feature From Hollywood to Hanoi – which was edited in the hallowed halls of New York City’s dearly-departed Du Art Film Labs. Sharing these 85 mins to a sold-out house is one of the greatest honors I’ve experienced as a filmmaker. General Võ Nguyên Giáp – the last of the Vietnamese revolutionaries – wanted his legacy to be the forging of friendships and peace, not of enmity and war. We are the custodians of that message.
Many witnesses to war in my film are dead, many of my Hollywood friends are dead along with my family. End of an Era.
Today was simply beyond expectation. To share this journey, my life’s work, Dear Vietnam at the legendary New Plaza Cinema, I can think of no better tribute to the those who may not be with us today, but live on this film. My husband, who encouraged me to go back to my homeland, my father, who may have disapproved of my meeting communist leaders, but who translated their every word in Vietnamese, Irwin Young, who opened his world to me over the decades… And to the tireless work of those who labored behind the scenes. My partner, two-time Oscar-winning Writer & Director Sir Christopher Hampton, who has never stopped believed in this film since its inception and took it upon himself to translate some of the General’s most important words, those he conveyed to me in French.
This screening at the New Plaza Cinema has been an honor, that required mobilizing teams across several time zones from London, to Ho Chi Minh City to NYC and Martha’s Vineyard to make today happen.
I am off to Hanoi August 29th to film Viet Nam’s 80 years independance from French Colonialism 1945-2025.
For those further interested, I have attached a synopsis and bio.
